Vaccinate every child - Addicting games series vol. 5

www.givevaccines.org

I loved (still love?) being a kid. It is the time of our lives to love the simple pleasures. Today's ordinary was yesterdays extraordinary. The unfortunate truth is that in the world's poorest countries, many kids don't have these pleasures. Children in these countries are 10 times more likely to die of preventable disease than children in wealthier nations. Each year 2.5 million children succumb to diseases that could be averted through vaccinations. Today can prevent these deaths.

Play some quizzes and games at www.givevaccines.org and for every correct answer, you will provide 0.01 ml of a life saving vaccine that will be given to a child in need. The money is donated directly to the GAVI Campaign, who the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates have:
  • Prevented 2.9 million deaths from vaccine preventable illnesses

  • Provided an additional 36.8 million children with basic vaccines (against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis)

  • Protecting 176 million additional children with new and underused vaccines

Down in New Orleans

www.sweethomeneworleans.org

This August my wife and I took a road trip down to the Gulf Coast. We've been fortunate enough over the years to partake in some great adventures overseas but haven't traveled across most of our own country. Being from the Northeast, the United States feels so vast but that's what also makes it so diverse. We ventured on down to New Orleans and made our way through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Over the week in "Nawlins" we embraced the food, history, music and culture which made for an unforgettable trip.

I'm not going to go on about Katrina or the BP oil spill, both of which have devastated the city, but rather what we can do to preserve the deep rooted traditions that are now and will always be alive in this great city. Sweet Home New Orleans is a non-profit whose mission is to support the individuals and organizations that will perpetuate New Orleans’ unique musical and cultural traditions. They help New Orleans musicians, Mardi Gras Indians, and Social Aid & Pleasure Club members get on their feet, get to work, and revitalize our community and the cultural economy of New Orleans.

Now just to avoid confusion, the actual free donation site is called www.racefortherainforest.com. I know... wtf? But the site has dedicated New Orleans as an "honorary rainforest" because of the 57'' annual rainfall average. Much of the money raised through our clicks support the city of New Orleans, specifically the Sweet Home New Orleans organization.

Share the table

www.barillaus.com

Sitting down and sharing a meal with your family can be invaluable. Life can get in the way pretty easily in this fast paced, instantaneous-is-still-too-slow world we live in. I grew up on a home where eating together connects you with one another's lives and Sunday dinners with the WHOLE family were a must...though I suppose that comes with the territory when your family is from Italy.

Barilla pasta has started a program in conjunction with Meals On Wheels Association of America called The Barilla Family Dinner Project, where $1 is donated for every visit to their site. Over $14,000 has already been raised for Meals on Wheels to ensure meals for senior citizens.

...plus there's a pretty sweet recipe section from famed chef, Mario Batali.

Want to join my village?

www.joinmyvillage.com

I have a village... in Malawi. Want to join it? Well, okay, maybe I don't actually HAVE a village in Malawi, but it's pretty awesome to be able to help a specific village. Talk about both sides of the Microphilanthropy coin...

JoinMyVillage.com works with General Mills, who has pledged to donate over $500,000 through web activity on this site. Check it out -- it's pretty fun. You: 1. Choose a village 2. Unlock funds (each action you take is a $1 donation General Mills makes) 3. Invite people to join your village (increases your donations).

Your simple actions make a real difference for these villages. How do you value these next few moments? Check it out and pass along some good karma.

mother, mother ocean

www.care2.com/click-to-donate/oceans

I've been an avid scuba diver for the past 12+ years and was diving off the coast of Cape Ann this past weekend. Like many of us I have always felt connected to the ocean and for me diving is an incredible way to experience it and it's fascinating inhabitants.

What many don't realize is that 90% of the big marine predator fish are gone, all six species of sea turtle are listed as endangered or critically endangered, and populations of sharks and rays have been decimated worldwide. Partnering with Oceana, our friends at care2.com works with it's sponsors to donate $1 for EVERY CLICK (awesome!) to help preserve our oceans.

In 2009 alone Oceana's effective campaigning helped:
  • save sea turtles by prohibiting deadly longline fishing gear in waters where sea turtles forage

  • protect the Arctic from industrial fishing

  • preserve sharks through legislation to prevent shark finning in the U.S.

  • ban the catch of threatened sharks in Spain

If you feel that connection to the waters, take a moment and make a difference.

A fish or a fishing pole?

Ripple.org

"Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, feed him for a lifetime."
Ripple.org and the Grameen Foundation do just that - together they help a poor borrower finance enough money to start their own business and lift themselves out of poverty.

With every click, sponsors of The Ripple donate $0.10 to help those in need start a new business, and with it, a new life. Loans of as little as $100 help change and save lives. Today is a great day to take action.

Spring cleaning - for America

cannecy.free.fr/waste/

So unless you've been living under the biggest and dumbest rock in the world, you know about the environmental catastrophe occurring in the Gulf. Today I'm posting up so that you are able to do (if nothing else) a tiny part in helping clean this beautiful country of ours.

Not only do the sponsors for The Cannecy help pay for clean-up efforts in the good ol' U.S. of A. but they provide links to other sites to demonstrate how you can reduce your personal waste. It is said that every American contributes to nearly 1 million lbs. of material waste per year. At first that sounds completely ludicrous, but if you think about it it's not far from the truth for such a consumer oriented and materialistic society. Step it up and do your part.

Dogs rule.

www.theanimalrescuesite.com

So I got sort of bummed out today. I was reading the blog of a highly respected marketing guru and stumbled across an archived article about why he hates dogs. As soon as I saw the article title, he lost a few points in my book. While I agree that everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, I began to notice that his reasons continued to revolve around reasons why (whether he knows it or not) he actually hates dog-owners. Okay - he gets maybe one point back.

Because of this I'm counter-blogging against him and writing for the Animal Rescue Site. In partnership with Petfinder.com, everyone who clicks on the main page button can help the 8 million unwanted dogs that are brought to shelters every year. My dog Lou was one of these pound pups, so I've got to give something back to my bud who's given me thousands of smiles and laughs over the years.

Seriously, Seth Godin - how could you not want to give her a scratch behind the ears? :)

HelpThirst - Addicting games series Vol. 4

www.helpthirst.com

I saw a commercial the other day that mentioned that there was something like 385 million-trillion gallons of water on this earth (I'll give you a moment to grasp that number because it took me a moment too). With that much aqua it's hard to imagine that close to a billion people don't have access to clean drinking water.

HelpThirst.com rocks. It's a game where YOU donate a free cup of drinking water for every correct answer. Don't let the beginning levels fool you - it gets tricky. And as a bonus, it's a brain training and memory game that improves your short-term memory recall. This means your actions last Saturday night were not in vain.

Raise cash for Global Education

www.e-inclusionsite.org

Education may be one of the values that we Americans take for granted. As kids, and often as adults, we fail to see the impact and importance of a rounded education. It's built into our society. Unfortunately, this is not the case across the globe.

I work for one of the world leaders in international education and am fortunate enough to see the value of education on a global scale. The Global E-inclusion Movement works with click sponsors to help raise funding for education projects for poor areas of the world.
